Chukka Chat September 2022
PAWA News
Vale Scott Maguire
The WA polocrosse community is saddened to hear of the passing of Scott Maguire. Scott was a member of the polocrosse community for 15 years. He was a member of the Margaret River Polocrosse Club and supported many other clubs in many capacities. He was often seen at carnivals to support his family even when he was not playing and was always available for a chat and a laugh.
Our thoughts are with Kim, Asha, Tyla and their family.
Umpires!
Polocrosse is a self umpired sport and without enough accredited umpires it is difficult to run carnivals.
The SCU and Zone Umpires are asking Club Umpires to look at your player lists and identify players who need their umpire accreditation updated.
Players, regardless of whether they are accredited umpires, are encouraged to attend Umpire training clinics and talk to their club umpire to improve and upgrade their umpire training and level.
Umpire Headset Co-ordinator
The PAWA is looking for a member to co-ordinate the umpire headsets.:
Potentially 1 per zone
Target 3 games a weekend incl finals

Safety and Your Equipment - Check your Gear
To all players - Its good practice to check your gear, make sure all straps are in good condition and not fraying or splitting, that your helmet has not been damaged etc.
Below is a timely reminder from Roz...
Hello Everyone,
An incident on the weekend while I was umpiring has prompted me to write this.
I was super involved with Pony Club while my children were young, and there were some really great rules about safety that were strictly enforced.
At the start of every year I would line all the kids up on their ponies and measure the room they have between their boot and the stirrup. People forget - they buy their rapidly growing child a new set of boots but keep the same size stirrups.
I had a piece of wood, 3cm x 2cm - the stirrup must have 2cm of room between the boot and the stirrup so that if the rider falls off they can get their foot out of the stirrup. There also can’t be more than 3cm, because equally as dangerous are kids riding in stirrups that are too big and their foot goes right through it.
Can everyone spend a few minutes and check your children, and yourselves for safety! Even you big blokes with your big square toed boots have to be careful! It is very hard to find 4 bars or oxbows that are bigger than 5” but I have had to find some for my large son and husband.
Ride safe!

Taking on the role as President or Secretary at your club can initially be a daunting experience. Often little handover or support is provided to volunteers to teach them how to be successful in their role, to ensure the club can meet its objectives.
Our 3 part Webinar series is designed to show you not only what needs to be achieved to maintain ordinary club function, but HOW to do it. We will provide step by step guidance to ensure you feel supported, and you’ll walk away with the confidence you need to complete your role in grassroots sport.
Begins: 05/10/22 at 7pm AEST
Money is extremely valuable for your sporting club because it has such a significant influence on keeping your club not only sustainable in day to day operations, but it also ensures your club can make long term strategic advancements.
This Sports Community Webinar Series has a key focus on grants, fundraising and sponsorship, which are three main ways to ensure your club has the best chance of creating funds, ultimately getting more money injected in a sustainable way, for less volunteer hours!
